Let's Rock: Buzz 2011 Goes Live on the Web

The 2011 Hillcrest "Buzz-A-Thon" was an 18-hour marathon broadcast, as usual.  But this time, the show was not seen on TV.  Instead, it was a live webcast via justin.tv.

"We had no choice, really, since our district gave up its cable access channel a couple of years ago.  We had to take it to the web, but it was fine," said longtime HTV adviser Dave Davis, who has now overseen 21 Buzzcasts.

The show started an hour later than planned, but then went off without a hitch as far as the webcast portion of the program was concerned.

"We were down for maybe five or six minutes once, and that was fixed in the first or second hour.  I know it was early on, and then we stayed on as planned," said Buzz-A-Thon Executive Producer Morgan Wilson, who also co-hosted an hour of the show with Jodie Putman, the Financial Coordinator of the event.

The show included students from Media I, Broadcast Journalism I, "The Weekly," and "HTV Magazine."  In all, about 75 students participated.  They did improv, sang, created zany contests, and did whatever they could to entertain viewers.  The hosts were on a set created by longtime HTV volunteer Mike Teuber, who also created this year's "Let's Rock" logo.

"I really had a blast," said freshman Brian Rea, who stayed up for all 18 hours of the show.  He wasn't the only non-sleeper.  HTVers Kimberly Moore and Adam Vigil were in it for the long haul, going wire-to-wire.

The roving reporters helped fill in dead time with segments from the west wing of the school.  A few did weather reports out the back door of the building, and others invaded the control room to see what the technical side of the show was like.

"We had some great improv games this year, and some great live music.  I think taking a year off in 2010 helped add some enthusiasm," said Davis, who plans to bring the show back in February of 2012.
